The Black Achievement Conference: Years 10-13

Hosted by the Widening Participation Team

LSE Campus, London, United Kingdom

LSE hosts a conference for African-Caribbean heritage students and their families as part of the UK’s Black History Month.

The Black Achievement Conference is an inspiring day with a line-up of speakers from London’s African-Caribbean community. The conference provides a taste of higher education and encourages students to continue to aim high. It celebrates past achievements and involves parents/carers in the education decision-making process. Speakers at the previous conference included Kat B from MTV and Bianca Miller, semi-finalist on The Apprentice in 2014.

This free event is for students to explore how they can continue to aim high, think big, realise their potential and make informed choices about what to do with their futures through activities such as:

  • Motivational seminars
  • Parent workshops with practical tips on supporting their child’s education
  • Student life workshops led by LSE’s African Caribbean Society.

Lunch is provided.

A conference participant says:

It was really amazing that the day also focused on parents and their roles in raising champions.

The conference is run by the Widening Participation team, which provides free activities to help London state school students progress to higher education. Find out more about LSE Widening Participation

All staff and students involved in the sessions receive appropriate training before the event. Staff or students working directly and regularly with young people on activities receive specific training on working with children, in line with our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy.

They also undergo an appropriate level Disclosure and Barring Service check.

LSE holds a wide range of events, covering many of the most controversial issues of the day, and speakers at our events may express views that cause offence. The views expressed by speakers at LSE events do not reflect the position or views of The London School of Economics and Political Science.
