The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has conferred an Honorary Fellowship on Sir David Higgins in recognition of his dedication and leadership in the governance of the School.

The Honorary Fellowship is one of LSE’s most prestigious awards, acknowledging individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the university and its community over a sustained period, above and beyond reasonable expectations.

Since joining LSE’s Council in 2019, Sir David has played a central and influential role in the governance of the university. In August 2020, he assumed the role of Chair of the Finance and Estates Committee at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic where his guidance and leadership were pivotal.

On the recommendation of Finance and Estates Committee, LSE raised a Green Bond to support the purchase of 35 Lincoln’s Inn Fields and progressed a series of strategic estate decisions that will shape the future of the university.

These include the School’s acquisition of 51 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, its moving forward with the redevelopment of Bankside House and the completion of its campus footprint with the purchase of 61 Aldwych. These achievements represent a period of ambitious and transformative progress.

Sir David continues this service through his leadership of the Environmental, Social and Governance group, guiding a significant review of LSE’s ESG policy.

Beyond LSE, David’s distinguished career in civil engineering and infrastructure development is considerable. His leadership of organisations such as the Olympic Delivery Authority and Network Rail, and his work on projects of national significance including the 2012 Olympic Games and HS2, speak to his capacity to guide complex ambitions to successful outcomes.

Chair of Council, Dr Susan Liautaud commented: "David Higgins has demonstrated extraordinary dedication and leadership in guiding LSE through moments of great challenge and opportunity. His insight, integrity, and steadfast commitment have profoundly strengthened our School, and we are deeply grateful for his lasting contribution."

Director of Estates at LSE, Julian Robinson said: “Sir David Higgins’ leadership on the Finance and Estates Committee has been transformative, guiding key decisions that have shaped the very fabric of our campus. His insight, strategic vision, and unwavering support have allowed LSE to secure, develop, and enhance our estate in ways that will benefit generations to come."

LSE’s Chief Financial Officer, Mike Ferguson said: “Sir David Higgins has been an exceptional source of wisdom, clarity and steady leadership during some of the most challenging and transformative years for LSE. His guidance to me as CFO has been invaluable and as Chair of the Finance and Estates Committee has helped steer major strategic capital and financial decisions that will shape the School for decades. His Honorary Fellowship is richly deserved.”
