Alice Yao has over twenty years’ experience teaching Mandarin Chinese both to native speakers and international students. She has taught at Imperial College, King’s College, and Richmond University prior to joining LSE.

Apart from teaching Chinese to undergraduate and postgraduate students, she also teaches British diplomats at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, focusing on aspects of Chinese society, culture, history and current affairs. She is also a GCSE and A-Level Mandarin examiner for the Cambridge and Edexcel Boards. She gained her teaching qualification in 2001 from Shenyang Normal University (Bachelor in Education), P.R.C. She also completed a unit on Chinese Applied Linguistics and Pedagogy alongside her M.A. in Sinology from the School of Oriental and African Studies.
