About me

Baek Yung Kim is Professor of Sociology at Seoul National University and a Visiting Professor at LSE. He received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Seoul National University. Currently he is the director of the Northeast Asia Center, Seoul National University Asia Center. He served as dean of Ingenium College of Liberal Arts at Kwangwoon University from 2018 to 2021. He also served as President of Korean Social History Association from 2021 to 2023, and as Executive Editor of Korean Journal of Urban History from 2009 to 2010.

He is an expert in Seoul studies, urban sociology, Korean modern history and historical sociology. His research focuses on colonial, postcolonial and developmental spatio-social changes of urban societies in Korea and Northeast Asia. Excellence in teaching Seoul studies to non-social science majors.
