Pleasure, power, morality, legality? This panel event invites experts from multiple fields and disciplinary perspectives to define what good sex is. Co-hosted by LSE Gender Department and the LSE SU Pride Alliance.

Speakers:

  • Dr Emma Spruce is a Teaching Fellow in Gender, Sexuality and Human Rights whose research examines the intersections of sexuality, space and place; exploring the movement of sexual politics across scales (from the nation to the neighbourhood), as well as the ways that place and space acquire meaning through narratives of sexuality and gender. In particular, Emma’s work interrogates the way that race, class and sexuality work on each other to govern ‘the right to the city’, challenges sexual progress narratives’ amenability to ideologies of gentrification and urban management, and unpacks the spatial and social imaginaries constituted through narratives about changing sexual worlds. The conceptual potential that working from ‘the local’ and practices of ‘neighbouring’ holds is central to Emma’s approach to these questions.

  • Dr Daniel Luther is a Teaching Fellow in Gender, Film and Media. They completed their doctoral research from SOAS University of London and are also one of the co-founders of the international platform and network called ‘Queer’ Asia now in its 5th year running. Their doctoral research examines South Asian public culture, including cinema, literature, new, online and social media for the production and reiteration of gender and sexual norms. In addition to their research interests in South Asian public culture, South Asian Film Studies, and Literary Studies, their research interests also include Film Festival Studies, and Inter-Asia Research focusing on decolonial, post-colonial queer methodologies and practice.

  • Amraj Lally is a doctoral researcher with experience conducting research about sex and sexuality in London, Amsterdam and San Francisco. His current work examines men’s identities, health and pleasure through the lens of HIV Prevention programmes and geosocial matchmaking apps. He co-founded the LSE-funded podcast TECHNOSEXUAL which focuses on debates, perspectives and research on topics at the intersection of technology and sexuality. Furthermore, he is also responsible for bringing the Sexual Health, Awareness, and Guidance Week to fruition with his colleague Nathalie Grigorenko.

  • Amber Newman-Clark is an Education and Wellbeing specialist for Brook Charity the national sexual health and wellbeing charity for under 25s. She spends her days working with young people in a variety of settings teaching about sex and relationships. These settings include schools, youth clubs, SEND schools, Pupil Referral units, supported housing, women’s centres and many more. A big part of the work Brook do is opening up conversations about sex and relationship making them fun, interactive and led by young people. Ensuring these conversations include everyone with the to hope to give every young person the ability to make informed choices about sex and relationships.

  • Sound of Birch - Marti is an international facilitator and speaker specialising in women's empowerment and erotic leadership. With 11 years of experience in the sexuality field, Marti has created her own unique approach to transformation and education around consent, sex and relationships. Marti's background as a professional dominatrix enables her to imbue her teaching with intersectional feminism and politics, and provide a broader perspective around power and empathy.
