Professors in Practice

Every IGA Initiative is led by a Professor in Practice, an experienced practitoner in the subject who acts as a policy leader.

For the first IGA Initiative on Global Migration, the Professor in Practice is Peter Sutherland.

For the IGA Initiative on Global Finance, the Professor in Practice is the Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable.

Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable

Vince CableSir Vince contributes across a range of the IGA’s activities, drawing upon his experience in international economic relations and developing markets in particular.

From 2010 to 2015, Sir Vince was Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and he represented the constituency of Twickenham as a Liberal Democrat MP. Before entering the House of Commons in 1997, Sir Vince studied at the University of Cambridge and received a PhD from Glasgow University. He worked in government and then in the private sector, becoming Shell’s Chief Economist in 1995.

Sir Vince recently published After the Storm: The World Economy and Britain’s Economic Future. His personal website is www.vincecable.org.

Peter Sutherland

Peter SutherlandPeter Sutherland has been the UN Special Representative for International Migration since 2006. With the Secretary-General, he proposed the creation of the now active State-led Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).

In addition to serving as the primary link between the United Nations and the Global Forum process, he advises the Secretary-General on issues related to international migration and development, and leads initiatives to foster cooperation on issues such as protecting migrants affected by crises and ensuring that migration is part of the post-2015 UN development agenda. He is returning to LSE after serving as Chair of the School’s Court and Council from 2008 until early 2015.

Commenting on the appointment, Professor Erik Berglof, Director of the IGA, said:

“I am delighted to welcome Peter to the IGA, and back to LSE.

As the architect of the World Trade Organisation and now Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN on international migration - in which role he is the father of the Global Forum on Migration and Development - he brings to our Institute unparalleled knowledge, wisdom and skills to find innovative solutions to the world’s largest challenges.

Peter will be a major asset to IGA and LSE and we are honoured to have him with us.”
