Looking back on my three weeks in London for LSE Summer School, it’s the little things that made the experience truly unforgettable. In this blog, I will be sharing my top highlights from outside the classroom. From good food and nice walks, to new friendships and adventures in and around the city, these were the moments that made my LSE Summer School experience memorable.

Exploring London

London is full of surprises, revealing something new every day. Known as one of the most walkable cities in the world, it felt like every neighbourhood had its own charm – whether it was a cafe, a bustling market, or a bookstore tucked away on a quiet street. Many afternoons were spent wandering aimlessly, only to stumble upon hidden gems that made the city feel endlessly exciting.

Morning walks quickly became a routine I looked forward to. In the early, peaceful hours before the hustle and bustle, I would head out to enjoy the stillness of the streets and the cool morning air, before heading back to High Holborn for breakfast with friends. It was a small ritual, but one that gave me space to breathe and explore London at my own pace, even amidst the packed schedule of Summer School.

Day Trips: Oxford, Cambridge and Windsor

Weekends were the perfect opportunity to explore more of England, and the day trips organised by LSE Summer School were a highlight. Cambridge, Oxford and Windsor, each offered their own distinct atmosphere. Strolling through the centuries-old colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, it was impossible not to feel the weight of history and legacy. Windsor, on the other hand, with its castle and picturesque streets, carried a majestic charm that felt both grand and inviting.

I loved how the trips balanced structured tours with free time. The guided portions gave insight into Britain’s traditions, history and academic heritage, while the free hours allowed us to explore at our own pace, and share meals or conversations with new friends. Together, these moments added a rich cultural layer to my LSE Summer School experience.

New Friends

The best part of LSE Summer School was the people. You’ll hear this a lot, but it’s true – the friendships you make here are special. I met people from all over the world, making friends in class, through LSE student accommodation (I stayed in High Holborn Residence), and from the different activities I participated in.

Being in a new city with new people makes connections form quickly. One evening we’d be studying together, the next we’d be out late finding the best street food stalls or exploring everything London has to offer. These connections turned what could have been a solo adventure into a shared experience I’ll never forget.

Food and Culture

One of the best parts about living in London, was the incredible variety of food. The city brings together flavours from all over the world, and it felt like every meal was an opportunity to try something new – from comforting street food to beautifully presented dishes that reminded me of home. Sharing meals with friends became a highlight of my days, whether it was over a quick bite in-between classes at a nearby cafe, or long dinners filled with laughter and conversation.

Beyond food, London’s cultural scene is second to none. Watching a musical in the West End theatre was an experience I’ll never forget. The energy of the performers, the atmosphere of the theatre, and the way the audience was completely absorbed in the story made it truly magical. It was a reminder that Summer School wasn’t just about studying – it was also about being immersed in everything this vibrant city has to offer.

Pro tip: keep an eye out for last-minute tickets, as you can often find West End shows at discounted prices!

Final thoughts

For me, Summer School wasn’t just about lectures or essays. It was about assimilating into a new city, discovering its rhythms, and building friendships with people from all over the world. Those experiences, both big and small, are what made my time in London truly unforgettable.
