London is an extraordinary city, however, it can be overwhelming at first, especially if you want to see as much of it as possible in a short time. In my experience, I found that the best way to explore London is to make a list of places you want to visit – here’s mine to help you get started.

Sightseeing
We’re starting strong with London’s most iconic landmarks. Many of them are located close to one another, making it easy to explore on foot. Check out:

Neighborhoods
One of the first things you’ll hear at LSE is that London is a very diverse city – and it quickly becomes clear how true that is. Each area of the city has its own character, atmosphere and pace.

  • Soho – a dynamic spot known for its nightlife, clubs, diverse eateries, buzzing bars and diverse culture.
  • Notting Hill – famous for its pastel-coloured houses, and Portobello Road Market.
  • Shoreditch – filled with street art, vintage shops and incredible street food.
  • Mayfair – an elegant area with art galleries, luxury boutiques, and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Parks
London is truly one of the greenest cities in Europe, and summer is the perfect time to visit some of its finest parks. Throw together a picnic, ride a bike or simply walk through it!

  • Hyde Park
  • St James’s Park
  • Green Park
  • Regent’s Park

Markets
Whether you want to experience a fantastic meal or buy a vintage ring, London’s markets are the best place for it. Some of the markets are only open on certain days like Columbia Road Market (head there for the flowers on Sunday), while others are open every day. Check each market’s opening times and days for specifics.

Food
Trying local food is an essential part of the London experience. My biggest recommendation here is to step out of your comfort food zone and try something new, like these British classics:

  • Fish and chips
  • Sunday roast
  • Full English breakfast
  • Afternoon tea

Bookstores
If you’re a book lover, London won’t disappoint. The city is home to some of the most beautiful and historic bookshops you’ll find anywhere. Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Daunt Books – breathtaking interior and you can buy the famous tote bags.
  • Hatchards Bookstore – the oldest bookstore in London, it is really beautiful and exceptionally historic.

Museums
London’s museums are world-renowned, and many are free to enter – making them incredibly accessible for students.

  • British Museum – home to artefacts from across the globe, in a breathtaking building.
  • Tate Britain – a collection of paintings by British artists.
  • Tate Modern – dedicated to modern and contemporary works with various exhibitions.

Theatre
London’s theatre scene is exceptional, and even a single performance can be a highlight of your summer. LSE Summer School even organises trips to certain shows, which can be a great way to see famous musicals with your Summer School friends!

  • West End – London’s equivalent of Broadway, offering world-class plays and musicals. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness Wicked or The Phantom of the Opera.
  • Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre – a unique opportunity to experience classic works in a historic setting.

London offers far more than you can experience in just a few weeks – but that’s part of what makes it so exciting. During Summer School, taking the time to explore the city alongside your studies can enrich your experience in ways you might not expect.

Whether it’s visiting a museum, trying a new dish or simply walking through a different neighbourhood, each experience adds something unique to your time in London.
