This new study resituates the Middle East in the First World War, analyses decision-makers and evaluates the problems that arise when attempting to convert military operations into strategic benefits: the results are often surprising.

Robert Johnson is the Director of the Oxford Changing Character of War Programme, Senior Research Fellow of Pembroke College, and Associate of the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford.

Heather Jones (@WW1POWs) is Associate Professor of International History at LSE.

The Department of International Relations (@LSEIRDept) is now in its 88th year, making it one of the oldest, and largest, in the world. The Centre for International Studies at LSE is home to an interdisciplinary community of scholars from around the globe undertaking innovative research with an international dimension.
