Hi, I’m Yasmine, and this summer I had the incredible opportunity to attend LSE Summer School. It was my very first time in London, and honestly, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. Before arriving, I imagined something very formal, maybe even a bit intimidating - long academic days, strict schedules, and little time to do anything else. But once I got there, I quickly realised that my experience would be so much more than just lectures and exams.

I took FM250: Finance, a course I chose to strengthen my academic background, since finance is what I study at university. From day one, I could feel the energy of the LSE environment. The campus was buzzing with people from all around the world.

Studying at LSE: intense but inspiring

One of the first things that surprised me was how engaging the classes were. The professors were approachable, dynamic, and truly passionate about their subjects. They encouraged participation, questions, and real discussions.

It wasn’t just about learning formulas or theories; it was about understanding how finance works in the real world, and connecting concepts to global economic events. Despite the fast-paced nature of the course, the atmosphere was motivating rather than stressful.

A home in the heart of London

During my stay, I lived at High Holborn, a LSE residence, which was honestly the perfect location. It was close to the campus, surrounded by cafés, and within walking distance of Covent Garden and the River Thames.

Because Summer School attracts students from every corner of the world, I met people from places I had only ever read about. There’s something really special about being surrounded by people who are all there for the same reason, to learn, to explore, and to make the most out of three unforgettable weeks.

Life beyond the classroom

Even though the academic side of the programme is intense, there’s so much more to the LSE Summer School experience. I took part in several Spark events, which are workshops and activities designed to help students develop personal and professional skills. I joined sessions on stress management, how to write an effective CV, and how to create a cover letter that truly stands out.

These sessions were not only practical but also surprisingly fun and interactive. They gave me useful tools I can use in my future career, but also made me realise that LSE really cares about its students’ development beyond academics.

The Summer School team also organised day trips and visits to iconic London landmarks. That balance between study and exploration made the whole experience richer.

Falling in love with London

Since it was my first time in London, I made sure to explore as much as possible. I still remember my first walk through Covent Garden, the buzz of Piccadilly Circus, and the calm beauty of Hyde Park on a sunny afternoon. I visited museums, markets, and local cafés, and every corner of the city had something new to offer.

What struck me most was how open and welcoming people were. Whether it was classmates, professors, or Londoners themselves, everyone seemed eager to connect. It’s a city full of energy and creativity, and it’s impossible not to be inspired by it.

Looking back: what I learned

When I think back on my time at LSE Summer School, what stands out the most isn’t just what I learned in class, but how much I grew as a person. I became more independent and more open-minded.

If I could give one piece of advice to future students, it would be this: don’t be afraid to say yes to everything. Attend the extra events, talk to people you don’t know, go on that spontaneous trip. You’ll be amazed by how much you can experience in just a few weeks.

For anyone considering the LSE Summer School, I can only say, go for it. You’ll not only learn from world-class professors but also from the people around you and from the city itself. It’s an opportunity to expand your mind, your network, and your perspective on the world.
