About our programmes

MSc study in the Department of Social Policy reflects approach to analysis of social and public policy that is international, interdisciplinary and applied. Taught by some of the leading researchers in their fields, our programmes draw on our particular strengths in international and comparative social and public policy, development, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), migration, population and health, criminology, behavioural public policy, and social policy research. They enable you to specialise in these areas, while providing you with a strong grounding in the core concerns of social and public policy and equipping your with the analytical skills to evaluate social and public policies.

MSc Criminal Justice Policy
The MSc Criminal Justice Policy provides an opportunity to apply the concepts and theoretical perspectives from criminology, sociology, law and psychology to the subjects of crime, social order and criminal justice institutions.

MSc International Social and Public Policy
This programme addresses how states and societies respond to global challenges of social, demographic and economic change, and of poverty, migration and globalisation. It is underpinned by the LSE approach to social and public policy that is explicitly international, interdisciplinary and applied.

The MSc ISPP replaces and consolidates five previous MSc programmes: Social Policy and Planning, European and Comparative Social Policy, Social Policy and Development, Social Policy and Development (NGOs), Social Policy (Research)

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a two year, interdisciplinary, graduate programme in public policy and administration, with a special emphasis on rigourous empirical training, particularly in economics, econometrics and political science.

MPA Curriculum

Core training in political science, economics and quantitative methods during the first year is followed in Year 2 by the MPA Capstone where you will apply your knowledge and skills to a real issue for a client organisation. Alongside the compulsory courses, you will take the option courses and have an opportunity to write a dissertation or Policy Paper if you wish to.

The opportunity to specialise your degree

MPA students have the opportunity to add a specialism to their degree by taking and passing certain courses. The Inequality and Poverty specialism requires students to take and pass PP4X6 Welfare Analysis and Measurement. Find out more about the Inequality and Poverty specialism here.

Careers, where will the MPA take you?

The MSc Social Research Methods is hosted by the Department of Methodology. The MSc programme will provide you with the opportunity to develop sophistication in research design and quantitative and qualitative research while maintaining a focus in a social scientific discipline.
