Presenter Bio:

Prior to joining GIWPS, Elena worked at the World Bank and her research has covered the gender dimensions of humanitarian aid, social norms, forced displacement, financial inclusion, and peace processes. Elena holds an MSc from the London School of Economics and a BSc from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.

Seminar Abstract:

Advancing gender equality and the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda requires tools that track progress and identify where gaps persist. Join Elena Ortiz from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security for a presentation on the WPS Index which scores and ranks 177 countries in terms of women’s status. The WPS Index represents a unique metric of women’s inclusion, justice, and security and offers a critical tool for policymakers, practitioners, and activists working on issues of WPS. In addition to new country rankings, the 2023/24 edition features deep-dive analysis into political violence against women, the gender dynamics of recent conflict trends, and the relationship between women’s status and other important outcomes such as peace, democracy, and resilience against climate change.
