We have little idea about whether hospital treatment makes patients better. In his inaugural lecture Andrew Street explains why this matters and what can be done about it.

Andrew Street (@andrewdstreet) is Professor of Health Economics in the Department of Health Policy at LSE. Previously he was at the University of York, which he joined in 1995, and where he was Director of the Health Policy team in the Centre for Health Economics and Director of the Economics of Social and Health Care Research Unit (ESHCRU).

George Gaskell is Emeritus Professor of Social Psychology and Research Methodology. He was awarded the Gago medal in 2018 for lifetime contributions to science policy in Europe and is the lead researcher of multi-country studies on the social, ethical and legal impact of the life science in Europe and a European study on responsible research and innovation in neuro-enhancement. He is the Chair of LSE and Partners Behavioural Science Consortium, conducting studies in support of European Commission directives and policy discussions.

The Department of Health Policy (@LSEHealthPolicy) is home to a diverse student body, determined to become future leaders in health policy and health economics, exploring policy-relevant interdisciplinary academic curriculum. Based in the heart of London, we are uniquely positioned to carry out impactful health and social care research, influencing and informing national and global policymaking and implementation.
