Weather-Ready Essentials
London’s weather is famously unpredictable. One moment it’s sunny, the next, there’s a drizzle. To stay comfortable, pack a reliable umbrella, layered clothing for cooler evenings, and sunglasses for those sunny spells. If you plan to explore the city during the day, sun cream and a hat will keep you protected. Layers are your best bet for unpredictable weather.
Explore Comfortably
London is a very walkable city, and you’ll want to pack comfortable shoes - trust me, your feet will thank you after a day of exploring! Having Citymapper on your phone will help you navigate public transport with ease, while Google Maps or Apple Maps are great for planning walking routes. A portable charger is essential to keep your phone powered for long days out.
Create a to-do list of must-see places. There’s so much to experience, from historic sites to vibrant markets, and having a flexible plan ensures you make the most of your free time.
Academic Supplies – Be Prepared
LSE Summer School will challenge and inspire you, so bring your laptop, notebooks, and pens to stay organised. Lectures are fast-paced, and you’ll likely spend time in the library before exams. Having the right supplies on hand will keep you focused. Remember, the UK uses type G plugs, so pack the necessary adapters. A USB multi-port charger will keep your devices powered throughout the day.
Travel Essentials
In terms of documents, you’ll need your passport, visa (if applicable), and LSE confirmation letter. Make photocopies of these documents and store digital backups. A small first-aid kit with basic medications, including any prescriptions, is also a smart addition. While London has plenty of food options, bringing a few comfort snacks from home can be a nice treat during study breaks.
Everyday Practicalities
A reusable water bottle is a must for staying hydrated throughout the day – you’ll find lots of water fountains to refill for free around campus. Also, pack comfortable loungewear for downtime in your accommodation. A backpack is great for carrying essentials, whether you’re heading to class or exploring the city. If you’re a coffee or tea lover, bringing your favourite blends from home can make mornings cosier. LSE also has a gym, so if fitness is part of your routine, you’ll have access to a well-equipped facility.
Before you head off…
I hope this guide helps you feel ready and confident for your time at LSE Summer School. Being prepared with the right essentials makes all the difference, but remember, it’s also about embracing new experiences. I know you’ll have an incredible experience - just as I did!
