5 day intensive programme (7  - 11 June 2021)

This short course provides leadership training in the skills required to manage yourself and other people, and demonstrates how excellent leadership transforms organisations.

There are major challenges facing the leaders of today who seek to shape organisations for tomorrow. New models of leadership are emerging to address these challenges, and these developments require a different approach to thinking about effective leadership. There is also an increasing demand for ethical and engaging leadership that enhances the performance and well-being of employees, as well as the performance of the organisation.

Course participants are drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds and are individually selected on to courses to promote the sharing of different perspectives and alternative approaches to day-to-day challenges.

This executive course is suitable for:

Entry requirements

Achieving Leadership Excellence participants are required to have:

  • Fluency in English
  • A good undergraduate degree or significant work experience in a relevant role(s)
  • Candidates must be in a supervisory role to participate in 360 degree feedback
  • Candidates must have at least 5 years post-university industry experience. Typically our participants have more than ten years’ work experience.

Programme structure

Our approach is interactive and personal

You will be encouraged to conduct one in-depth personal styles assessment (The Saville Consulting Wave), and one 360-degree leadership skills assessment as pre-assignments. These assessment methods are included in your tuition fee, and they will act as a springboard to truly uncovering your leadership strengths. Highly interactive lectures, discussions and exercises will combine to build a comprehensive picture of your individual potential as a leader.

In addition, our instructors will use their extensive experience to review your particular development issues and challenges during the designated coaching sessions. At the end of the week, you will gain a clear and confident grasp of your leadership style along with a tailored development plan to ensure you continue to grow as you lead.

Course outcomes

Sessions will challenge you to consider your own leadership characteristics and techniques in the context of robust analytic frameworks.

Course objectives:

  • To emphasise the critical study of leadership and its implications for global leadership
  • To introduce selected theoretical frameworks
  • To apply leadership theories to practice
  • To develop personal leadership skills and style

We motivate you to think about:

  • The nature of leadership and the importance of understanding how individual differences influence personal leadership style
  • How to build behavioural styles and skill sets that complement your leadership preferences
  • How to understand risk taking and ways to manage risks in organisations
  • What it means to “look like” a leader, and why it is important
  • How an engaging leadership style can increase employee performance, innovation and commitment
  • Ways in which an organisation’s culture shapes our behaviour and attitudes, and its significance for leadership and leadership effectiveness.

Faculty and guest speakers

The course will be taught by:

Professor Connson Chou Locke joined the Department of Management in 2008. She teaches courses in organisational behaviour, leadership, and negotiation and decision making. In 2013, she received the Department of Management Outstanding Teaching Contribution Award and in 2015 she was Highly Commended for Inspirational Teaching in the Student-Led Teaching Excellence Awards. Find out more here

Dr Emma Soane joined the Department of Management in 2008. She teaches organisational behaviour and leadership to postgraduate students and executives. Dr Soane holds a BSc Psychology (University of Leicester), an MSc Occupational Psychology (University of Sheffield). and a PhD Psychology (University of Sheffield). Find out more here
