Best practice summary:
- Write with your audience's needs in mind, not yours, they are looking for information, served quickly
- Structure your site to mirror the visitor's needs and not your divisional structure
- Put important and contextual information at the top of the page
- Use simple language and use subheadings so visitors can scan your page for relevant information
- Visitors should find critical information immediately and other information within two or three clicks
- Ask colleagues or family to find something you need people to find easily - and to feedback their experience
- Keep link names, sentences, paragraphs and pages as concise as is practical
- Review your content regularly - make sure it's up-to-date
- Check regularly for broken links
- Always name links the same as the title of the page you are linking to
- Avoid bold, italic and capitalised text where possible as it's hard to read on-screen
- Never underline text that is not a link
- Lists often make things easier to read on-screen
- Images should be resized for the web and you must include alternative text for each image
- Don't forget you can crop images to make them better
- Keep your page simple and concentrate on one subject per page
