Sustainability at Summer School

Welcome to #SustainableLSE for the summer!

Marshall_SN_UGC_Sustainability

You are joining a world-class institution that takes its commitment to sustainability seriously. We look to embed sustainability throughout every part of our operations, from our course content to the research we publish, and the way we run our campus.

In 2021, we became the first UK university to be verified Carbon Neutral and we are working hard towards achieving a net-zero campus by 2050. On top of that, we sell healthy and sustainable food on campus, work in partnership with organisations outside of LSE to progress the sustainability agenda and explore ways to enhance biodiversity at LSE (Zac Efron has even visited the bees on LSE’s rooftop for his Netflix documentary ‘Down to Earth’!).

How can you get involved with sustainability during your time here?

  1. Subscribe to Green Flash, our monthly sustainability newsletter. It’s full of updates, opportunities to get involved, and interesting research from outside of LSE. You can also follow us on Instagram and Twitter.
  2. Take the Introduction to Sustainability module and find out a bit more about what we’re up to! You can also explore our #SustainableLSE web pages for more in-depth information.
  3. And follow our pledges below….

Pledges for your time at LSE (and beyond):

  • I pledge to separate and dispose of my waste using the correct bins (see our Waste and Recycling Guide for details). We have special orange bins for disposing of coffee cups correctly, look out for them!
  • I pledge to stop using single-use plastic where possible! I will bring a reusable cup/water bottle/food containers/cutlery to campus. Did you know we charge an extra 25p for all disposable cups and plastic bottles to disincentivise use, so it’ll save you money too. You can purchase an LSE-branded KeepCup from the LSE Shop on campus, if you want a useful memento from your time studying here.
  • I pledge to choose planet-friendly food options. We offer a wide-variety of plant-based options when it comes to plant-based options, including a vegetarian/vegan eatery (Shaw Café) and a ‘carbon impact labelling’ system on all hot food so you can choose the more sustainable options available.
  • I pledge to only print if absolutely necessary, to save paper as part of LSE’s Digital Smart campaign work.
  • I pledge to choose a sustainable way to travel to campus. I will walk or cycle where possible (LSE has lots of bike storage), or take public transport, rather than travelling by car. Whilst studying at Summer School, why not see the sights of London on your way to campus by hiring a TfL Santander, Human Forest or Lime Bike?

We all have a responsibility to create a #SustainableLSE whilst studying here. Thank you!
