Students must have completed ST202 and ST302 before taking this course.
Course content
This course is an introduction to actuarial work in non-life (general) insurance. It opens with an overview of the industry, its history, and the principles of risk-sharing, before building towards a rigorous treatment of the mathematical and statistical tools that underpin actuarial modelling.
Core topics include loss distributions for modelling individual and aggregate claims, the collective risk model with frequency and severity components, and compound Poisson processes. The course also covers reinsurance arrangements and examines how risk is distributed between insurer and reinsurer. Further topics include ruin theory and the Lundberg theorem, Bayesian statistics and credibility theory, and claims reserving using run-off triangles.
Throughout the course, key concepts are implemented in R, giving students practical experience alongside the theoretical material.
Teaching
9 hours of seminars and 20 hours of lectures in the Winter Term.
Formative assessment
Problem sets and R programming exercises which are similar to exam questions will be assigned.

Assessment
Exam (90%), duration: 180 Minutes in the Spring exam period.
Problem sets (10%) in Winter Term Week 11.
10%: In Class Problem Sets: This will be a timed computer-based assessment to be taken in person on campus. Students are required to solve a set of course-related problems using R. Please refer to Moodle for more specific instructions about the nature of this assessment.
