This course is available on the BSc in Sociology. This course is not available as an outside option to students on other programmes. This course is not available to General Course students.

This course will be taught in a workshop style where you will develop your academic and professional skills in the field of sociology. The proposed topics will be:

1) Critical reading: how to approach a sociological text, how to manage your reading workload

2) Writing: how to approach essay writing, how to build an argument in line with the conventions of sociological writing

3) What jobs exist in the world - navigating the wider context with a sociology degree

4) Managing your assessments: strategies for approaching assessments, managing workload

5) Oral presentations and group work analysing sociological problems 

6) Mapping sociological ‘skills’ and ‘values’ to jobs

7) Workplace Simulation: Teamwork, Curiosity & Problem‑Solving in Action

9 hours of workshops in the Autumn Term.
1.5 hours of workshops in the Winter Term.

This course has a reading week in Week 6 of Autumn and Winter Term.

This course is taught across 6 x 90 minute workshops in Autumn Term and 1 x 90 minute workshop in Winter Term.

There is no formal 'formative' coursework for the course. A variety of 'formative exercises' will be conducted in the workshops and aimed at developing and enhancing a range of study and professional skills linked to the study of sociology and the practical experience of how these sociological skills can be used in the workplace.

This course is not assessed. Attendance at all workshops is required.
