Priority is given to students from the School of Public Policy.  Students from other programmes will be considered if places remain.  MPP students, second year MPA Double and Dual Degree students and students from outside of the School of Public Policy should submit a statement in support of their request. Previous economics and econometrics are required for all students (please give details in your statement).

The expectation is that students will have previously taken PP440 and PP455 or other equivalent courses.  Students who have not taken PP440 and PP455 (including MPA Dual and Double Degree students spending Year 2 at LSE) will require permission from the course lecturer to attend the course.

This course explores environmental economics in developing countries, and development economics in the context of climate change. We will first review key concepts from environmental economics and examine how the context of developing countries may shift which questions are most important, and which policies are most appropriate. We will then review key concepts from development economics and ask how these may change as climate change impacts the developing world.

The course will discuss traditional topics in environmental economics - externalities and information acquisition - in contexts with limited state capacity, and weak institutions that pose challenges to government policy. The course will emphasize the problem of climate adaptation, and how this may change traditional anti-poverty approaches. Beyond these topics, the course will provide relevant analytical tools for policy analysis and critically engage with frontier quantitative empirical evidence

15 hours of seminars and 22 hours of lectures in the Winter Term.

Students to complete weekly exercises based on course readings.

A reading list will be distributed at the start of the course.

Exam (70%), duration: 180 Minutes, reading time: 15 minutes in the Spring exam period.

Essay (30%, 2000 words).
