This course is available on the MSc in Accounting and Data Analytics and MSc in Accounting and Finance. This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit. This course uses controlled access as part of the course selection process. Students will be admitted on a first-come-first-served basis, with priority given to MSc Accounting and Data Analytics and MSc Accounting and Finance students who apply during the Autumn Term.

Participants will be expected to have a solid understanding of the core financial accounting course, and of the three primary financial statements.

For many companies, corporate restructuring transactions - for example, mergers, acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures, and recapitalizations - are an integral part of their strategic activities.  The objectives of this course are (i) to introduce students to such transactions; (ii) to provide them with a solid understanding of the key relevant accounting and financial reporting concepts; and (iii) to teach them how to analyse those transactions using accounting data. 

This is a practical course. At the end of it, students should be in a position to both understand the accounting implications of a range of different corporate restructurings and to review and interpret the financial statements of companies that have been impacted by them

30 hours of seminars in the Winter Term.

This course has a reading week in Week 6 of Winter Term.

The course consists of one hour and a half sessions delivered twice a week in the Winter Term, with a reading week in Week 6.  Typically, the second session of each week will involve the discussion of a case that participants are expected to have read in advance.

There is no formal class participation component of the assessment. However, a student’s contribution to case discussions may be considered when deciding which side of a grade border they fall on.
