Course content

This is a half-unit course that builds on the foundation laid by the first-year financial accounting course.

The course opens with an examination of the regulatory framework governing financial accounting. It then concentrates on the preparation and analysis of published financial statements for public interest entities, whether operating independently or as part of a group structure. The course also explores the purpose and content of published financial statements, the challenges associated with consolidated accounts, and the use of accounting information to assess corporate performance. In addition, it covers a range of specific financial accounting issues, including segment reporting, foreign currency translation, corporate pension reporting, and the treatment of taxation. The precise mix of topics may vary from year to year to reflect the latest developments in financial reporting, standard-setting, and related debates.
