This course is available on the BSc in Language, Culture and Society, BSc in Sociology, Erasmus Reciprocal Programme of Study and Exchange Programme for Students from University of California, Berkeley. This course is not available as an outside option to students on other programmes. This course is available with permission to General Course students.
This course has a limited number of places (it is capped). Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.
This course cannot be taken with SP271 Psychology of Crime and Criminal Justice or SO210 Crime, Deviance and Control.
Requisites
Mutually exclusive courses:
This course cannot be taken with SO210 at any time on the same degree programme.
Course content
This course encourages students to think about and debate some of the major issues in the sociology of crime and crime control. We explore the social construction of crime and deviance; key factors that shape patterns, perspectives and experiences of crime and crime control, including gender, race and ethnicity, and the media. The main objective is to develop a holistic perspective on some of the key topics of criminological scholarship.
Teaching
1 hours of lectures in the Spring Term.
12 hours of lectures and 9 hours of classes in the Winter Term.
This course has a reading week in Week 6 of Winter Term.
Formative assessment
Students are required to complete one piece of formative assessment.
