Pronunciation II: Melody, Rhythm & Stress

Course content

This short course covers the macro features of pronunciation, focusing on the key features at the sentence level. It is recommended (but not essential) to take Pronunciation I in advance. This course will raise students’ awareness of how spoken English sounds overall when spoken naturally at native speaker speed. Topics include:

  • Word stress: Considering the frequency and position of word stress.
  • Sentence stress: Investigating the individual word stress and overall sentence stress in spoken English.  
  • Intonation: The 'ups' and 'downs' of the voice when speaking and how this affects meaning.
  • Melody: How the stress, rhythm and pitch combine to create the 'music' of the language.

Teaching

This course will be offered at four different times during the academic year namely: AT Wks 2-5; AT Wks 7-10; WT Wks 2-5 and WT Wks 7-10.
