Course content
This short course covers the micro features of pronunciation, providing a broad but detailed understanding of the key features of spoken English. This focus on pronunciation at word and short sentence level will greatly enhance students’ understanding of the language and help highlight areas they can improve. It is recommended (but not essential) to take this course before Pronunciation II. Topics include:
- The sounds of English: An overview of the 44 sounds.
- The glottal stop: Bottle of water = bo'le'o'wa'er.
- The schwa sound: The most important and prevalent sound in English, controlling stress, rhythm and the natural flow of spoken language.
- Connected Speech: What happens to words in sentences when spoken at native speaker speed.
Teaching
This is a 4-week course consisting of four 1-hour classes. The course will be offered at different times during the academic year namely: AT Wks 2-5; AT Wks 7-10; WT Wks 2-5 and WT Wks 7-10.
