This course is available on the MSc in Finance (part-time). This course is not available as an outside option to students on other programmes. This course uses controlled access as part of the course selection process.

This course cannot be taken with FM476 at any time on the same degree programme.

Pre-requisites:

Students must have completed FM422E and FM423E before taking this course.

Course content

The Venture Capital and Entrepreneurial Finance course FM417E is designed primarily for students who plan to become involved with a new business venture at some point in their career ―as a founder or investor. The course is also appropriate for students interested in gaining a broader view of the financing landscape for start-ups. The course introduces students to the myriad complexities of valuating and financing young, high potential ventures, with specific introduction of frameworks, tools and deal terms. The course will also discuss the structure of venture capital industry, the performance, and the basic economics of a fund and the relationship between the general partners and the limited partners. 

Teaching

30 hours of seminars in the Autumn Term.

This course is taught in the interactive lecturing format. There is no distinction between lectures and classes/seminars; there are “sessions” only, and the pedagogical approach in each session is interactive.

Formative assessment

Each week there will typically be a formative or summative case study assignment.
