This course is compulsory on the MSc in Philosophy of the Social Sciences. This course is not available as an outside option.

The course is intended to develop the ability to make philosophical arguments and to write structured philosophical essays. It will serve to prepare students for research and writing their dissertation.  In Michaelmas term, we will cover philosophical and argumentative writing, with a number of in-class exercises, and we will discuss the structure and content of an MSc dissertation in Philosophy. In Summer Term, students will present their dissertation as a work in progress.

10 hours of seminars in the MT. 20 hours of seminars in the ST.

In Michaelmas Term, seminars will cover key research and writing skills, as well as provide students the opportunity to discuss potential research topics. In Summer Term, students are required to present their dissertations as work in progress (the precise format of these seminars will be organized in year). 

A number of short assignments and reading whose completion will aid the writing of the dissertation may be set over the course of the year.
