This course is available on the LLM (extended part-time), LLM (full-time), MSc in Human Resources and Organisations (Human Resource Management/CIPD), MSc in Human Resources and Organisations (International Employment Relations and Human Resource Management), MSc in Human Resources and Organisations (Organisational Behaviour), MSc in Inequalities and Social Science and University of Pennsylvania Law School LLM Visiting Students. This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit.

Regulation of the content and the form of the employment relation. The contract of employment, including express and implied terms and the scope of employment law. Regulation of minimum wage and working time. Protection against discrimination in the workplace. Discipline and protection from dismissal and termination of employment. Business reorganisation and economic dismissals. Freedom of association and the right to strike. The approach involves theoretical perspectives, economic analysis, comparative law of employment, and examination of relevant European law.
This course is delivered through a combination of classes and lectures totalling a minimum of 20 hours in Michaelmas Term. This year teaching will be delivered through recorded online lectures and a mix of both in-person and online classes to accommodate students who are unable to physically be on campus. This course includes a reading week in Week 6 of Michaelmas Term.
Students will be expected to produce 1 essay in the MT.
Detailed syllabus of weekly readings will be available and the materials can all be accessed through Moodle. Hugh Collins, Employment Law, 2nd edn (Oxford University Press, 2010), Chapters 1-9.
Exam (100%, duration: 2 hours, reading time: 15 minutes) in the summer exam period.
Candidates are allowed to take an unannotated copy of a collection of statutory materials into the examination.
