Availability

This course is compulsory on the BSc in Geography with Economics. This course is available on the BA in Geography, BSc in Environment and Development and BSc in Environmental Policy with Economics. This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit and to General Course students.

Pre-requisites

Students should have normally taken one or more from: EC100, GY201, GY222.

Course content

The aim of the course is to develop theoretical and empirical understanding of spatial economic processes in order to study and evaluate a wide range of issues and policies. Particular emphasis will be put on urban and regional economies and business and worker location decisions. More specifically, the first part of the course will study models of the location of economic and innovation activity with a particular emphasis on regional economies. The second part of the course continues to study location, but focuses more on household location decisions, personal mobility and their implications for spatial labour markets, housing markets and residential neighbourhoods.

Teaching

20 hours of lectures and 9 hours of classes in the MT. 20 hours of lectures and 9 hours of classes in the LT. 1 hour of classes in the ST.

Formative coursework

Students will be expected to produce a minimum of two essays during the year.

Indicative reading

A detailed reading list will be given out at the beginning of the course. Reading will predominantly include journal articles and policy documents.

Assessment

Exam (75%, duration: 3 hours) in the main exam period.
Essay (25%, 2500 words) in the LT.
