Availability
This course is compulsory on the MSc in International Migration and Public Policy. This course is available on the MSc in Political Sociology, MSc in Sociology and MSc in Sociology (Research). This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit.
Course content
Coverage of contemporary sociological perspectives on migrant integration including theories of international migration, immigration policy, labour market incorporation; welfare and social rights; 'assimilation' and social integration; multiculturalism; religion and ethnicity; and the second generation.
Teaching
10 hours of lectures and 15 hours of seminars in the MT. 1 hour and 30 minutes of seminars in the ST.
Reading week: week 6.
Formative coursework
All students are expected to write two non-assessed pieces of work during the term.
Indicative reading
There is no recommended textbook. Books of a general nature that cover substantial parts of the syllabus are: S. Castles and M. J. Miller (2013) The Age of Migration (5th edn); P. Kvisto and T. Faist (2010) Beyond A Border and A. Portes (2014) Immigrant America (4th edn). A more comprehensive bibliography will be available to students taking this course.
Assessment
Exam (100%, duration: 2 hours) in the main exam period.
Exam will be held during the Summer Term exam session.
