Availability

This course is compulsory on the BA in Anthropology and Law and LLB in Laws. This course is available as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit and to General Course students.

Course content

Introduction to the law of contract, including formation of contracts, express and implied terms, misrepresentation, exclusion clauses, remedies for breach of contract. Introduction to the principles of the law of restitution. Introduction to the law of torts: negligence and other specific torts, causation, defences, remedies for torts.

Teaching

18 hours of lectures and 9 hours of classes in the MT. 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of classes in the LT. 2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of classes in the ST.

The lectures will be given by a number of different teachers. The basic work is done through the classes, and the lectures are designed to introduce the topics on the syllabus.

Formative coursework

Students will be expected to produce 4 essays in the MT and LT.

Assignments will be set, marked and returned by each class teacher.

Indicative reading

A general reading list will be issued at the commencement of each term. Students should follow the advice of their class teachers as to the textbooks to be read.

Assessment

Exam (100%, duration: 3 hours, reading time: 15 minutes) in the main exam period.
