This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit.

The Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey have been an integral part of European power dynamics since the early modern period. This course aims to introduce the foundations of Modern Turkey and major social, political, and historical dynamics that shape her relationship to Europe. These include questions of secularism and religion; religious and ethnic minorities; role of the state; human rights; democracy; legal reforms; and Turkish immigrants in Europe. Students will be required to follow media reports on Turkey and be prepared to make a presentation about the background of an issue that is covered lately.

Students on this course will have a reading week in Week 6, in line with departmental policy.

Students will be expected to produce 1 essay in the LT.
