The course is available to all research students.

Pre-requisites

The course will assume good knowledge of qualitative research methods as covered in MY521 and MY530.

Course content

The aim of the course is to provide understanding and competence to students in advanced qualitative research methods used in leading-edge social research.

The content of the course will change from year to year. Possible topics include forms of textual analysis such as rhetorical and argumentation analysis, computerised text analysis, biographical research methods, diary methods, experience sampling and bemetology, qualitative evaluation research, etc. 

Details of the content for any one year will be available from the Department of Methodology office.

Teaching

10 hours of lectures and 10 hours of seminars in the LT.

Readings for this course will vary according to the topics covered each year. A reading list will be provided at the beginning of the course. 

Assessment

PhD students taking this course will be assessed on the basis of a Research Project (4,000 – 6,000 words).
