About me

Inger Skjelsbæk is Research Professor in political psychology at Center for Gender, Peace and Security (GPS), Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and Associate Professor in culture and community psychology at the Department of Psychology and Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX), University of Oslo.

Inger was the Deputy Director at PRIO from 2009 – 2015 and she has been research director for two of PRIOs research departments, Dimensions of Security 2013 -2014 and Ethics, Norms and Identities 2008 – 2009. She holds a PhD in social psychology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and she has been a Fulbright Fellow at the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEES) in 2002-2003 and a guest researcher Human Rights Center (HRC) in 2011 and 2012, both at the University of California, Berkeley.

She started her research career by studying the formation of female identities in conflict areas. Through her PhD dissertation which focused on the aftermath of the mass rapes and sexual violence during the Bosnian war from 1992-1995 and then, second, through a postdoc project focusing on perpetrators of sexual violence crimes also from the Bosnian conflict. Her current research builds on these past themes but has also expanded to transitional justice issues.

  • 2016 – 2019 Research Leader of the social science pillar in the project Nordic Branding funded by the University of Oslo.
  • 2015 – 2018 Research Professor and Project leader on: Research project funded by Norwegian Research Council (FRIPRO) entitled: Equal Peace? Women’s Empowerment and Multicultural Challenges in War-to Peace Transitions.
  • 2014 - 2017 Research Professor and Project leader on: Research project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Peder Sather Center for Advanced Studies, University of California Berkeley entitled: Bearing Witness: An Interview Study with ICC Judges.
  • 2015– 2017 Research Professor at PRIO Gender Peace and Security Centre.
