Memorial fund recognises LSE scholar's passion for education

Academic Department Support

The Mayling Birney Memorial Fund has been established by the family of alumna and former staff member Dr Mayling Birney (MSc Economics 1999) to support students in the Department of International Development.

Dr Birney was Assistant Professor in Development Management, and a programme co-director for the MSc in Development Management within the Department of International Development.

The philanthropic fund will be used for an annual prize recognising the best overall performance from a student on the MSc Development Management programme.

“Dr Birney was a deeply admired colleague who will be much missed by all who knew her,” commented Professor Ken Shadlen, Head of the Department of International Development. “Whether she was teaching students, chairing roundtable discussions or attending graduation ceremonies, she was always a consummate professional who brought warmth and vigour to all that she did, and staff fondly recall her brightness, wit and insight. We were fortunate to have Mayling with us, and her death is a tragic loss for the department and the School. It is fitting that gifts to The Mayling Birney Memorial Fund will support education in memory of her commitment to and passion for enhancing students’ educational experiences.”

Thank you to all alumni and friends who supported the Department of International Development in memory of Dr Mayling Birney via the regular giving programme.
