Health Systems Strategy Lead, Roche

Pablo Morales is the Health Systems Strategy Lead for Roche in Switzerland. He studied on the 5 day intensive Market Access Academy programme.

"I was looking for a rounded understanding of the opportunities in the field. I left with a better view of the whole access universe."

The market access universe

For me, market access is an objective rather than a department. To reach that objective you have different teams or functions that all work towards it. I wanted to get a better understanding of how the other teams do that. For me, that’s the access universe.

The best part of Market Access Academy was the discussion on how to incorporate access elements around clinical trials. We looked at how you can relate to your health authority partner, and then incorporate their needs into the structure of your clinical trials. They’ll be more streamlined because the health authority will know what they’re getting: the trials are already aligned with them. I can now incorporate that knowledge into my research and development. It’s all about connecting ideas.

New perspectives

LSE is world-renowned so there was no doubt that the quality of the programme would be good, and my expectations were met. The workshops we had with different colleagues were great. I work in health systems as a strategy lead, while most of the people who attended Market Access Academy work around a specific product. We all learnt a lot from each other.

There were pharmacists and epidemiologists and other clinical specialists – but there were people from different backgrounds as well. I work on above brand solutions as a healthcare economist. I wasn’t trained in any clinical field, but I specialise in health, and I was looking for a rounded understanding of the opportunities in the field. I left with a better view of the whole access universe.

Learning from the best

The faculty really know their stuff – they’ve been around for years and developed their careers not just with LSE but outside too. They’re all extremely capable – and they’ve proven it. They’re among the best. In the morning we had theoretical lessons with them and in the afternoon we had a workshop to discuss things and apply what we learned in the morning. I really liked the workshops: the discussions were so open.

Market Access Academy is a very connective programme. Yes, it was connective in the sense of meeting a lot of people and exchanging numbers, but more in the way that it linked together topics, concepts and ideas and processes. If I had to sum up the programme in three words I would say impactful, interesting and connective.
