Management Accounting takes the process of measuring and communicating financial information a step further by using the outcomes as an integral part of strategic decision-making.

This course provides an overview of modern performance measurement systems and tools to improve decision-making in a wide range of business settings.

The most successful organisations are adept at finding a way to align employee motivations with the strategic goals of the organisation. You will take away a toolkit for achieving this. Through two integrated modules, you will explore the design and use of performance measurement systems for decision-making in complex and multi-national organisations, with a particular emphasis on managing behaviour and performance and a look at the role of Big Data.

A range of practical examples and case studies are used throughout the course to show cutting-edge application of performance measurement concepts and techniques in real-life contexts, drawing on influences from traditional economics, behavioural economics, human behaviour and motivation. You will explore real-world cases from businesses as diverse as Cleveland Clinic (healthcare), EdX (online education) and the Bundesliga (German soccer) – with whom our academics are collaborating.

You will have the opportunity to work in teams to redesign the corporate strategy and the performance measurement system for an underperforming automotive company with the goal to restore profitability. You will present your results to the class via a professional presentation that is aimed at convincing the company’s top management about the value of your analysis and proposal.     

This course is recommended for students who wish to develop the critical-thinking skills to make strategic business decisions, especially those targeting roles in consulting or business management. It is equally applicable to develop the skills needed for further academic studies.

Prerequisites

A university-level introductory course in a business-related subject such as accounting, finance, management or economics.

  • Performance measurement frameworks and Key Performance Indicators
  • Risk measurement and Key Risk Indicators
  • Performance measurement and managerial work
  • Performance feedback
  • Public performance reporting
  • Economic, including behavioural economics, models of judgement and decision making
  • How to make Big Data bite-sized so that the relevant portion is shown to positively affect behaviour
  • Cases from education, health care, and corporate settings.

Course outcomes

  • By the end of the first module, students will develop an understanding of how financial and non-financial performance information can be aggregated and used to guide managers in effectively applying resources to achieve organizational alignment and goals.
  • By the end of the second module, students will develop an economic understanding, including behavioural economics, theories of response to performance management techniques and be familiar with lessons from current applications in various corporate, non-profit, and government settings.

The Department of Accounting continues to enjoy a reputation as one of the leading groups in the world for teaching and research on the economic, institutional and organisational aspects of accounting and financial management. The department strives to combine 'global appeal' with a distinctive 'European orientation' in terms of institutional knowledge and affiliations, as well as intellectual traditions.

The Department, along with the Departments of Finance and Management, was ranked as the UK leader for Business and Management Studies in the most recent National Research Assessment Exercise.

On this three week intensive programme, you will engage with and learn from full-time lecturers from the LSE’s accounting faculty.
