LSE study of the Green Paper pay system for teachers and its effectsImportant message from David Marsden: 25.05.2001 Dear Teachers, LSE Study of the Teachers' new pay system The second wave of questionnaires sent out in May 2001. You will no doubt remember that when you kindly completed the questionnaire for this study last January and February, I said that there would be a follow-up survey in one year's time. After seeking the advice of the six teachers' unions, the DfEE and some other bodies, I have decided that the best time to carry out the survey in England this year is in late May. To have done so earlier this year would have meant that a substantial number of teachers in the sample would not have known the final result of their Threshold applications, and so to ask them about it would have been premature. As last year, I have sent out questionnaires both to classroom and head teachers. Both points of view on how the new pay system has been working are important to the study. I hope very much that I shall be able to count on your continued support for this valuable project. You may be interested to know that our previous work on performance pay in the Civil Service was prominently cited in the Government's Makinson Report on Civil Service pay reforms, and has been intensively used by both the civil service unions and employers as they seek a better pay system. You may find out more about some of our previous work on performance related pay by consulting the web site of the LSE's Centre for Economic Performance (www.cep.lse.ac.uk). which can also be accessed from 'Research centres' from the LSE's home page (www.cep.lse.ac.uk). Some of the publications can be downloaded. Once this second wave of questionnaires has been analysed, I shall write a short report which will be placed on this web site so that you may follow the results. That will probably be available in August. With my best wishes and thanks. Yours sincerely, David Marsden. Copyright © London School of Economics and Political Science 2000 |
