The global community recognizes the need for action in limiting aviation emissions, but current policies vary by country and airline, creating confusion for consumers. Moreover, the aviation industry facilities international commerce and connection, and is currently struggling from the global health crisis. Under our proposal, governments would collect a small, non-punitive fee from each flight to add to a national Aviation Impact Resource Fund (AIR Fund). This fund will be implemented as an extension to the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) agreement, which aims to keep carbon emissions capped at 2020 levels. The AIR Fund is unique because it is the first-proposed aviation-fee specially tied to environmental spending. With the AIR Fund, customers can relax, knowing that their travel is making a difference, airlines can meet their commitment to sustainable travel, and governments can make investments that will work for everyone, not just those who fly.
