A warm welcome from LSE Careers

Hi, I’m Maddie your designated ADMIS Careers adviser and I’ll be working with you over the coming academic year to help you achieve your career goals. Keep reading to get answers to some common questions, find out how to book appointments and access job vacancies, get a quick tour of our website and find out how the Careers Service can help you get ahead in your career.

This year, we've created an Information for new students mini-site to accompany this newsletter and the annual Careers Service brochure, which is ready to collect now from Floor 3, Tower 3. Together they act as a guide to LSE careers online and the huge variety of services on offer to you.

      Dedicated careers advice sessions for ADMIS only
I'm available for 20 minute appointments every Tuesday from 10am – 12pm. Topics you might want to talk to me about include:
  • Career choice and finding information about different roles and sectors
  • Recruitment processes and selection methods including psychometric tests and assessment centres
  • CV and covering letter preparation
  • Interview technique and coaching on case studies

You can make an appointment by emailing John Gilbert: j.e.gilbert@lse.ac.uk  In addition you can also book general 15 minute appointments via My Careers Service.

Key dates and event highlights
These are some highlights of the first few weeks of Michaelmas term 2010.  There is much more taking place throughout the term, see Careers events.

  • Applications open for LSE internships  - 6 Sept
  • Careers stall for Orientation week - 27-29 Sept
  • Volunteering fair - 5 October
  • Skills sessions begin - 6 October
  • Banking and Financial Services fairs - 12 & 14 Oct
  • 1st Venture entrepreneurship masterclass - 13 Oct
  • Internships fair - 27 October
  • Business and Management fair - 4 November

At our careers fairs - talk to companies like Accenture, PA Consulting Group, PWC, Cap Gemini, Diamond Management and Technology Consultants, Ernst & Young, McKinsey and OC&C, companies in the banking and financial services sector with operational roles including American Express and Goldman Sachs and international companies like Unilever offering a range of business IT based roles.

Also look out for: Energy forum, employer presentations from BCG, Deloitte, HSBC, Unilever and RBS and employer led skills workshops from BT, Accenture, Ernst and Young, Bain and Goldman Sachs.

Watch out for early deadlines!
Many deadlines for graduate scheme occur in October and November and in many cases you will benefit from getting your applications in a couple of weeks early.  More on the Information for new students site.

  Access and explore LSE Careers online
You can use us as soon as you've completed on-campus registration in September. The Information for new students mini-site should help you begin to explore the variety of online resources available. There are two main areas of our website:

LSE Careers website - for information resources, downloadable leaflets and booklets, news, deadline dates, access to Vault, Wetfeet, Going Global and a range of partner websites and streaming videos.
• You can access much of the LSE Careers website as soon as you have your LSE username and password. Visit the IT Services site to register for your LSE network account: IT@LSE guide for new students

My Careers Service - the online booking system where you can make appointments, browse and book for events and search for job vacancies. We've just created some video tutorials to help you navigate My Careers Service on YouTube/LSECareers (see Uploads).
The first time you log into My Careers Service, you'll be asked to update your profile. Select your occupational interests here to receive email alerts and jobs from us.
• Access to My Careers Service takes longer. You will need to wait approx two working days after on-campus registration before you can log in with your LSE username and password.

LSE Internships scheme - applications open
You can apply now for the prestigious LSE Internship Scheme which offers internships in Parliament, policy, public affairs as well organisations dealing with Media Policy and Corporate Social Responsibility. Our Internship Schemes are exclusive to LSE and provide LSE students with a unique source of opportunities in niche sectors. Internships are for 15 hours per week, from October to March and are open to incoming postgraduate students only.
There will be a short presentation on the LSE Internship Schemes on these dates:
• Wednesday 29th September at 12pm, room G108
• Friday 1st October at 1pm, room D502

Careers Service brochure 2010-11

  The basics
The Careers Service annual brochure is a comprehensive guide to services at LSE Careers. Free copies are available to collect from LSE Careers, Tower 3, Floor 3.

Do you advertise vacancies?
My Careers Service contains our online jobs board which typically advertises over 500 live vacancies ranging from volunteering positions to roles for experienced hires. Many of the employers listed target LSE students making it a great place to start your job search.

How can I meet with employers?
There are many opportunities to meet with employers both on and off campus at employer presentations, careers fairs, at our recruiter in residence sessions where you can talk 1:1 with graduate recruiters and through employer led skills sessions covering a range of topics. Bookings take place on My Careers Service and normally opens one week in advance of the event. See careers events for more.

Where can I find careers information?
The Careers Service website contains lots of information about forthcoming events, making applications and interviews, sector-specific resources and has access to numerous online subscriptions including Wetfeet and Vault online careers libraries.

From late September onward, call in to the Careers Service to collect FREE copies of publications including the Inside Careers Guides and Target Series and the Times Top 100, handy for deadline dates and employer info. There’s also a reference library with a wide range of specialist books including: The Directory of Management Consultancies and Professional Services Firms in the UK, Crack the Case: How to Conquer Your Case Study Interviews and Vault Career Guide to Consulting, Wetfeet Guide to Careers in Specialized Consulting: Health Care, HR, IT and Wetfeet Insider Guide to Careers In Management Consulting.   Develop your employability skills

Venture @ LSE Careers - entrepreneurial support
Venture offers advice and support to entrepreneurs via business surgeries, an extensive website and a entrepreneurial masterclass series which takes places in Michaelmas, culminating in a Pitch it! business plan competition.

Volunteer Centre @ LSE Careers
Volunteering can be fun, a great way to meet people and employers recognise the value of skills gained through volunteering. If you are interested in finding out more visit the Volunteer Centre website or email volunteer@lse.ac.uk  Many organisations recruit for volunteers at the beginning of the year so sign up soon to receive regular updates from the Volunteer Centre and come along to the Volunteering Fair on 5th October.

  Top tips - if you do nothing else in Michaelmas...
  1. Log into My Careers Service and set your profile to receive news and jobs throughout the year.
  2. Visit us on Houghton Street during Orientation week and pick up your Careers Service annual brochure
  3. Spend a lunchtime at a core careers seminar on CV writing or application forms.
  4. Pick up some free careers guides from LSE Careers (Tower 3, Floor 3) from late September
  5. Become LSE Careers Facebook friend
