About me

Peter Tibber was British Ambassador to Colombia from 2015 to 2019 when Colombia’s first state visit to the UK took place with former President Juan Manuel Santos visiting the country in 2016. During this appointment Dr Tibber supported the Colombian government to negotiate and implement the peace agreements with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Previously, he held appointments at at the British Embassy in Mexico City and on various Latin America desks in London. During his diplomatic career, Dr Tibber was also posted to Sudan, France, Turkey, Germany, and Pakistan. He was a member of the senior management team of UK Trade & Investment.

His extensive diplomatic experience in the Latin American region and particularly on conflict prevention and resolution and the promotion of human rights contributes to the academic and knowledge exchange activity of the Latin America and Caribbean Centre.

Peter completed a DPhil in medieval history before joining the British diplomatic service, where he worked for 35 years. He also has an MBA from the Open University.

Peter is vice-chair of Cannock Mill Cohousing Community, which practices mutually-supportive, environmentally responsible living, and is a trustee of the Firstsite arts centre in Colchester.
