About me

Dr. Kauê Lopes dos Santos is a Professor of Geography in the Department of Geography at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil), as well as Visiting Fellow of the Latin America and Caribbean Centre at the London School of Economics (LACC-LSE, UK). He previously completed postdoctoral research at Universidade de São Paulo (USP, Brazil), and he has a Ph.D. in Human Geography and a Master's in Habitat, both from USP. Santos is dedicated to comparative urban and regional studies in the Global South. He addresses topics related to urbanisation and the urban and regional economy, focusing on Latin American and West African study cases. From 2004 to 2007, during his undergraduate in Geography at USP, Kauê investigated the impacts of the Brazilian financial system on the less capitalized urban economic activities of Sao Paulo. From 2009 to 2011, during his Master's, he deepened his previous research by analysing the effects of the Brazilian financial system on the consumption pattern of the low-income population living in Sao Paulo's periphery. From 2013 to 2017, In his Ph.D., he investigated different economic activities of Ghana, considering its connections to the regional, national, and international market, with a particular focus on the urban economy of Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tamale, and Bolgatanga. Also, from 2015 to 2016, Kauê spent one year as a visiting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley (UC, Berkeley, USA).Based on his Ph.D. investigation, Kauê's decided to promote a comparative investigation on the e-waste (WEEE) global value chain in Accra, São Paulo, and London. He also aims to understand how these activities are related to the consumption standards of urban populations and the environmental impacts they generate in the territories where they occur.
