Web editors are responsible for keeping their web pages fresh and up-to-date. They also need to ensure that their pages comply with the standards set out in the Best Practice Guide.

Creating a collection or resource

Both collections and resources are created by the Web Services Team in partnership with the web editor responsible. For more information, see Requesting a new site.

Publishing a collection or resource

Once created, the Web Services team will publish collections and resources after which control will be handed back to the web editor responsible. This is referred to as the handover (see Handovers).

Archiving a collection or resource

To archive a resource, send an email to the Editor (lsewebsite@lse.ac.uk) detailing the title and URL of the resource. The Editor will relocate the resource to http://old.lse.ac.uk/.

To ensure that traffic reaches its destination and that it decreases over time, archived sites should use a page requesting that users update their links. This page should be stored at the same URL as the first page of the collection or resource that has been archived. A template for this is provided at Archived. The title should be renamed from 'Archived' to the title of the resource that has been relocated. This page should be created and published by the web editor responsible. The page will be removed by the Web Services Team when appropriate.

Relocating a collection or resource

To relocate a resource, send an email to the Editor (lsewebsite@lse.ac.uk) detailing the title and URL of the resource to be relocated and the URL for the new location. The Editor will relocate the resource to the new location.

To ensure that traffic reaches the new location, relocated sites should use a page requesting that users update their links. This page should be stored at the same URL as the first page of the collection or resource that has been relocated. A template for this is provided at Relocated. The title should be renamed from 'Relocated' to the title of the resource that has been relocated. This page should be created and published by the web editor responsible. The page will be removed by the Web Services Team when appropriate.

Deleting a collection or resource

To delete a collection or resource, send an email to the Editor (lsewebsite@lse.ac.uk) detailing the title and URL of the resource to be deleted.

To ensure that traffic does not continue to seek a destination that no longer exists, deleted sites should use a page requesting that users update their links. This page should be stored at the same URL as the first page of the collection or resource that has been deleted. A template for this is provided at Deleted. The title should be renamed from 'Deleted' to the title of the resource that has moved. This page should be created and published by the web editor responsible. You must inform Web Services team when you do this so that we can delete the page on our servers too. If the page deleted is particularly sensitive, we can ask Google to remove it from its cache. We would do this if, for example, the page was a student case study and the student decided they wanted it removed. We would not do this unless the information in the page is particularly sensitive however, because after you've followed the procedure above the page would be automatically removed from Google's cache during its next crawl of the LSE website.
