About me

Nicola Degli Esposti holds an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from Leiden University and a BA in History from the University of Bologna. In his PhD (Whose Kurdistan? Class Politics and Kurdish Nationalism in the Middle East, 1918-2018), he analysed the history of Kurdish nationalism focusing on the role of class politics in shaping the divergent trajectories of the Kurdish movements in Iraq and Turkey. The PhD included extensive fieldwork in northern Iraq where he was a fellow (2018-2019) at the Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) at the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani. Since 2017, he has taught in numerous courses on the politics of the Middle East as well as International Relations theory at both BA and MA levels.


Current research includes nationalism, class politics and democratization in the Middle East.
