China leads the world in green technologies – while also being the largest emitter of greenhouse gases. It plans an expansion of the use of these technologies to ‘green’ its economic growth, as outlined in the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and 15th Five-Year Plan – and our China Programme is designed to support this process domestically and ensure that it advances a green transition globally<\/p>\n

The China Programme conducts policy-relevant research into the country’s green transition and China’s role in the transition globally. We are supporting Chinese officials as they design policies to green the country’s growth and encourage other countries’ green development. The Programme is also supporting policymakers in other countries in their approach to dealing with China in the global green transition and to learn lessons from China’s experience.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n

The China Programme has four focus areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Greening growth in China:<\/strong> Designing a comprehensive policy roadmap for greening growth, applying central ideas from the work of the Grantham Research Institute’s chair, Nick Stern, on the green transition as a growth opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. China’s role in advancing the climate agenda in international fora:<\/strong> Detailing the role China could take in advancing the climate agenda across global platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. China’s outward-facing green financing:<\/strong> Providing groundbreaking data and extensive analysis of the impacts and possibilities of Chinese financing, supporting country partnerships to develop green industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Global lessons from China’s green policies:<\/strong> Distilling China’s experience into usable policy lessons for other countries, especially within fiscal and monetary policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To scale up this work, the China Programme is expanding into a designated research unit: the China Green Development Lab. Led by Mathias Larsen and chaired by Nicholas Stern, the Lab will be collaborative, working closely with other parts of the LSE Global School of Sustainability, including the Centre for Economic Transition Expertise (CETEx) and the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) Global Climate Transition Centre, and with departments across LSE on projects related to China and environmental sustainability. Through the Lab, we will continue to work with key policymaking and research bodies in China and worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
