Dr Oliver Hailes joined the LSE Law School as an Assistant Professor in 2023 and the Grantham Research Institute as an Associate in 2025. He teaches international law and arbitration, including LLM modules on International Energy Law and Transnational Environmental Law. His recent publications include ‘Environmental Clauses in Investment Arbitration’, ‘The Energy Transition at a Critical Juncture’, ‘Valuation of Compensation in Fossil Fuel Phase-Out Disputes’, and ‘Lithium in International Law’. In 2024, he was appointed as an academic member of LSE’s ESG Consultative Group to advise on a review of the School’s investment policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dr Hailes completed a PhD in Law and LLM (First Class) in International Law at the University of Cambridge. Previously he worked for a commercial law firm and appellate court in New Zealand, where he is enrolled as a barrister and solicitor. Alongside his academic duties, Dr Hailes has consulted on live issues of international law related to climate change and the environment, including advisory proceedings on the obligations of States and the consequences of withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\n
