Following the deaths of two colleagues while cycling in and around London in 2023, staff and students at the Grantham Research Institute coordinated a cross-university open letter to the mayoral candidates in the May 2024 elections, asking them to pledge to make cycling in London safer. On the 18th of March, the letters and as-then list of signatures were delivered to the candidates. The death of LSE PhD student Cheistha Kochhar while cycling on March 19 was a new tragedy. We are continuing to gather signatures via <\/strong>this form<\/path><\/svg><\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Mayoral Candidates,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are staff and students at London’s universities that recognise that safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists will save lives across the capital and reinforce its status as one of the world’s great cities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, London’s streets are too dangerous. Around eight cyclists and 60 pedestrians die in London each year, and a further 2,000 are seriously injured.i<\/sup>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are therefore writing to ask that you pledge to: <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
