Professor Lord Nicholas Stern, Chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Global School of Sustainability at the London School of Economics and Political Science,<\/strong> said: “I welcome the clear and strong commitment from Ed Miliband to accelerate the pace of electrification and the transition to clean power. The climate crisis is evermore threatening, and the core of the response must be a rapid reduction in world demand for fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The conflict in Iran demonstrates yet again the dangers to the world and the UK of dependence on fossil fuels. Ed Miliband is charting a clear, constructive, and responsible way forward. Good for the U.K. and good for the world. The transition and the necessary investments will be good for economic growth, energy security, climate security, and the cost of living in the U.K. and beyond. The move to increasingly delink electricity pricing from gas prices is a key element in this process, for incentives, for stability, for income distribution, and for public acceptance of the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Any new exploration for oil and gas in the North Sea would have negligible effect on the affordability and security of UK energy. And it would potentially undermine UK climate leadership. The UK has been a real leader, and any perceived backtracking would damage global confidence in climate action. The management of diminishing supplies from the North Sea must take careful account of employment dislocation and opportunities, environmental consequences, energy security, and global efforts to tackle climate change.“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bob Ward, Policy and Communications Director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science<\/strong>, said: “Mr Miliband has set out an entirely rational response to the current fossil fuels crisis in the Middle East, and this is a welcome alternative to the wishful thinking by some of the other political parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The truth is that the UK does not have enough reserves of oil and gas that are economically viable at low market prices to reduce consumer bills or offer us energy security. The solution to our exposure and vulnerability to volatile international markets for fossil fuels is a diverse supply of clean domestic power for an economy that runs on electricity.”<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\n
