The UK is off track to meet its legal climate obligations. The public needs to know that candidates in the General Election are committed to put that right.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Climate Election 2024<\/a>’ has been set up to inform voters on General Election candidates’ climate credentials and promote the UK cross-party consensus on the urgent need to tackle climate change. To do this we are collecting information on the views and commitments of candidates. This work is being carried by the Grantham Research Institute at LSE with a cross-party supervisory panel<\/a>. 

Owing to the earlier than expected General Election, we do not yet have a complete set of data and need your help. 

We specifically want to know whether candidates are totally committed to the target of reaching net zero in 2050 and to interim targets set for 2030 and 2035, and whether, if elected, they will make sure we achieve these goals. These are the questions that we encourage voters to ask their candidates.  

We are inviting those of you based in England and Wales to: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Search the website<\/a> using your postcode to see what data we have on your candidates.   

    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Where data is missing, contact your candidates asking: 

    – Do you fully support the UK’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050 and to meeting the target for 2030 announced at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021? 

    – If you are elected in the forthcoming General Election, will you work to ensure that the UK does not shy away from these commitments?

  3. Send us their responses to Climate.Election2024@lse.ac.uk<\/a>

  4. Promote ‘Climate Election 2024<\/a>’ to your networks.

    For candidates that are elected, this project will then continue as a record of those commitments, to which the new members of Parliament should be held accountable. 
     
    ‘Climate Election 2024’ is hosted by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE and is overseen by a     cross-party supervisory panel of trustee directors<\/a>. 
     
    ‘Climate Election 2024’ covers candidates in England and Wales representing the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru.
