Responding to the announcements today by 10 Downing Street about the new Cabinet, Professor Sam Fankhauser, Co-Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science, said:<\/p>\n

“I am very glad that Andrea Leadsom, speaking as the energy minister this morning, confirmed that the new Government is committed to implementing the Climate Change Act, regardless of the re-structuring of Departments. It is not surprising that, as the holder of a degree in geography, the Prime Minister understands the importance of climate change. The Prime Minister is on record enthusiastically welcoming the passing of the Act, noting that it will “improve our national and economic security”. Business and investors will be further reassured by the fact that Parliament is scheduled to pass the Fifth Carbon Budget early next week, creating a statutory target of reducing the UK’s annual emissions of greenhouse gases by 57 per cent on average over the period between 2028 and 2032 compared with 1990. I expect the Government to continue strong progress on the transition to a low-carbon economy, contributing to innovation, creativity and growth, and building on the 17.4 per cent reduction in annual emissions that has been achieved since 2010.”<\/p>\n
